Andor Season 2 Release Date Gets A Disappointing Update

You sure are an impatient lot, aren't you? We've only just seen the debut of Tony Gilroy's Andor on Disney+, and already, fans are demanding to know more about the second series of the live-action Star Wars spin-off. We know Andor will round off with a second run of 12 episodes, but for those hoping it'll arrive soon after Season 1 wraps, we've got some bad news for you.

Following Diego Luna's breakout character from 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it should come as no surprise that Andor focuses on Cassian Andor. Billed as a hybrid between Star Wars and a spy thriller, it's basically what you'd get if George Lucas directed a James Bond movie.

While the arc of Andor Season 1 takes place over a year - five years before the events of Rogue One - Season 2 will periodically jump across the following four years until the famed Battle of Yavin. It might seem too early to be talking about an Andor Season 2 release date, and thanks to the latest update, that's just been confirmed.

Andor Season 2 Release Date: When's It Out?

Speaking to TheWrap ahead of the Andor premiere, Gilroy gave a disappointing update on the Andor Season 2 release date and explained, "I have two more years to go. We start shooting in November on Part 2. And I don't know if ... Our past pattern was two years, but I mean, I'll be on ... We'll shoot from November to August. And then our post[-production] last time was about a year."

Considering Andor will probably end on some sort of cliffhanger to set up the second chapter, it's sure to be an agonising wait until the Andor Season 2 release date in 2024. Then again, with the first reviews already praising the Luna-led series as one of the best projects to grace the galaxy, it's probably for the best that Gilroy and the team don't rush things.

Long waits between seasons are nothing new. In Star Wars alone, we may have gotten The Mandalorian Season 2 just a year after Season 1, but it will have been 2.5 years after that until we get to sit down with Season 3. Then again, this is nothing compared to the tenterhooks the likes Game of Thrones and Stranger Things has left us hanging on.

Alongside the aforementioned The Mandalorian Season 3, there's a lot for wannabe Jedi to swing their lightsabers at. After the credits roll on Andor Season 1, we've got Rosario Dawson starring in Ahsoka in 2023, Jude Law in the mysterious The Skeleton Crew, the High Republic era The Acolyte, and a long-rumoured live-action Lando Calrissian series.

Andor is the latest in Disney's push to move Star Wars into live-action series. Even though Rogue One was praised as a masterpiece, critics were less kind to Solo: A Star Wars Story. Hopes of a Yoda-centric anthology movie were soon canned, and following similarly scathing reviews for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, there's been a pivot away from movies.

Things are seemingly back on track for Star Wars, and if The Book of Boba Fett wasn't quite on the level as some of the other shows, Andor is off to a promising start. It's true that an Andor Season 2 release date in 2023 isn't entirely outside the realms of possibility, but with a rumbling in the dark side of the Force, we're going to mark 2024 in our diaries - just to be safe.
