It's a new dawn, it's a new day, for Apex Legends. Respawn Entertainment is jumping off the dropship with a brand-new chapter as we get ready for Season 14. There's plenty to unpack here, but among the minor and major changes, we've sadly lost self-revive. F in the chat, please.

Unlike Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone, it's not generic Operators or skins populating the battlefield, but a skilled crop of Legends that have their own unique crop of abilities. The big news of Apex Legends Season 14 is the arrival of Vantage, and while she's wasting no time settling in, let's not get too carried away with her arrival.

Is Self-Revive Still In Apex Legends?

Like any good battle royale game, Apex Legends has different gear that can help you out of a scrape. In-game, there are Helmets, Evo Shields, Knockdown Shields, and Backpacks to give you and your defences a boost. Out of them all, Knockdown Shields have remained the most divisive. When caught in a pickle, a Level 4 Knockdown Shield also provides self-revive that gives downed players a chance to cling to life.

Self-revive has been part of the game since Apex's inception, and while the slow animation and alert noises normally gave away your location before you could get back into battle, taking out a squad equipped with Level 4 Knockdown Shields was an added annoyance we had to contend with. While players are universally over the moon that Skull Town is back (in a new form), the removal of self-revive is more controversial.

Over on Reddit, players are sharing their thoughts on self-revive and paying tribute to the maligned mechanic. "I was lucky enough to get one last finisher win with Maggie before they patched it out," cheered one. Another sniped "If you cried about it being in game you’re a bit*h ✌🏻🤡". Others said it should've only been removed from Ranked and claim it's only gone because it cost streamers money: "People who haven't gotten wins/kills/rezs off from gold shields lol. I think it's a fun mechanic. Just take it out of ranked."

Will Self-Revive Return To Apex Legends?

Even though self-revive has been put in a Death Box, it has been swapped out with the Guardian Angel perk that previously came with Gold Backpacks. Those revived with a Level 4 Knockdown Shield return with more health and armour. Gold Backpacks also get an added bonus in the form of Deep Pockets - allowing to stack more large healing items.

We always knew this day was coming though. In June, Game Designer John Larson tweeted, "Self-rez feedback heard loud and clear." Although many expected a nerf, few actually thought Respawn would go through with axing self-revive completely. Whether it will return remains to be seen, but with most agreeing it's leading toward a more balanced Apex, we wouldn't count on it. Alas, self-revive, we hardly knew ye.
