Battlefield 2042 is set to be an absolute whopper of a next-gen title of course, but every new detail that we learn about it seems to imply that a whole new FPS experience will arrive with it. The reveal of Portal, the game’s new sandbox mode, was an immediate crowning achievement, putting control in the players’ hands and allowing them to build their own games using content from a myriad of Battlefield titles.

But, as has recently been announced, it looks like even the bots of the game will live up to the game’s next-gen expectations.

Battlefield 2042’s Bots Are Exceeding Expectations

In conversation with VG247, Ripple Effect Studios’ Justin Wiebe discussed the impact that bot AI will have on Battlefield 2042’s gameplay - particularly, how similarly the bots behave to real players.

“We’ve tried to put a lot of effort into making them play just like a player would”, he says. “So it would be really hard for people to tell the difference between an AI and a real human player because they will run around, they will drive vehicles, they will pick each other up, they will drop [each other] off at objective locations and things like that - it’s a very intelligent system.”

“You’re gonna be able to set things like the difficulty of [the AI], and there’s certain things you can tell them”, says Wiebe. “You’re allowed to do this, you’re allowed to do that. But because we don’t have a spatial editor, you’re not gonna be able to say, spawn AI over here and perform this ability. So trying to replicate something as complicated as a Destiny sandbox is probably not on the table right now.”

The suggestion that AI might be very difficult to discern from human players (despite suggestions that they might not be entirely customizable) is an interesting one, as many developers have tried and failed to execute this. The game might have the requirement to be constantly online even when playing against these bots, but if these promises come to be true then quite frankly, it won’t matter quite as much.

The game looks to be a big deal, and if these discussions about AI come to be true in the final product, then Battlefield 2042 could be a real game-changer.
