Earlier in 2020, the reigns for Black Ops Cold War were snatched from the grasp of Sledgehammer Games, and they were axed as the main developers by Activision. Subsequently, Treyarch stepped back in and resumed full control of the project which included the comeback on Zombies, a three-way integration with Modern Warfare and Warzone, and a typical Black Ops multiplayer experience.

However, just as Treyarch begin to implement their signature personality on the game, eyes have already been cast towards the next instalment, with Sledgehammer Gaming causing quite a stir on Twitter.

The developers have dropped a huge hint that they will be returning to the scene in 2021, and the possible return of Elo Suits and Jet Packs.

The COO of Sledgehammer, Andy Wilson, announced via Twitter that the developers had hired a whopping 150 people in the previous year, all of which are set to land in the studio when the pandemic blows over. With an unusually large amount of people hired, fans have quickly begun to speculate that they will be spearheading a new game.

Their next cryptic message landed on New Year's Eve, with the official account wishing everyone the best by stating "Power off. Power on. Let’s try this again. Happy New Year". To a non-Call of Duty fanatic this may seem a generally nice message, but those who remember Sledgehammer's main success in the franchise have taken this to have a deeper meaning.

Advanced Warfare was the marmite of COD's in history, with players either loving or hating the divisive instalment. From a competitive standpoint, AW was adored, but from a gameplay stance, it turned many of the original fanbases towards other games until boots on the ground COD was revisited. Boasting the most futuristic technology COD has ever seen, does "Power On" mean that the machines are set to take over again in 2021?

The next Call of Duty is also speculated to be back in the hands of Infinity Ward, sharing their bi-annual rotation with Treyarch.

Only time will tell as to whether Advanced Warfare 2 will land, or not.
