Call of Duty 2022 Expected To Be Modern Warfare 2 - But Not A Remaster

Call of Duty: Vanguard hasn't even landed in our disk trays yet, and people are already eyeing the return of Infinity Ward as its predecessor in 2022.

With Vanguard operating on the Modern Warfare engine, it appears Call of Duty's future could predominately be run by the same component, as IW look to continue on their typical three-year cycle.

Despite Vanguard not even being out yet, one leaker has already found that the enterprise underway, hidden beneath the codename "Project Cortez". The leaks also suggest that the title will be a familiar name:

"Modern Warfare 2".

However, the game will not be a remaster of the long-yearned for MW2 (2009), and will instead be a sequel of the franchise reboot that occurred a decade later.

The second instalment of the Modern Warfare reboot could carry the same name as the infamous playground of Captain Price and co., and could even see the same characters continue their story following the introduction of protagonists like Alex and Farah.

What this could mean though, is that we may finally get to see some of the nostalgic maps remade for the sequel, such as Highrise, Rust (again), Favela, and even Terminal.

Previously we've seen DLC's remake the likes of Scrapyard and Vacant be glossed-up for a makeover, although another MW2 title may finally unlock the forbidden fruit that is Highrise.

Activision has been very reluctant in the past about releasing a fully-fledged remastered MW2 multiplayer experience (despite re-launching the campaign), claiming that the modern engine will take away from the core designs and original feel of the game. 

Instead, they look set to continue revisiting selected maps by embedding them into the rebooted franchise, offering both a sliver of nostalgia decorated with a tantalising array of spicy new maps.

Either way, if Vanguard isn't for your liking, Infinity Ward will be returning with a suspected sequel to continue Modern Warfare's success.
