Crash Bandicoot Multiplayer Game Teases 10 Characters

We're apparently on the cusp of something big for the Crash Bandicoot series, as that spinning marsupial is poised to return - just not in the way you might expect him to. While Crash was once the de facto mascot of PlayStation, the recent Activision Blizzard acquisition means he's found a new home on Xbox. 

First whirling into our lives back in 1996, Crash Bandicoot started out as a relatively simplistic platformer. After the first three games, things went off the boil a bit, however, let's remember spin-offs like Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash have been big hits. Now, it sounds like he's trying something with a mysterious Crash Bandicoot multiplayer.

Is Crash Bandicoot Getting Multiplayer?

We recently reported on the rumoured Crash Bandicoot multiplayer, and with another update, we could have our first hints of what's on the way. According to gaming insider Liam Robertson, the Crash multiplayer could be a resurrection of the forgotten Wumpa League video game.

Robertson tweeted about Wumpa League last year and said it was supposed to be an add-on to Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time that was built in the same engine. Wumpa League was going to put two teams (orange and blue) against each other, with the simplistic mission to collect the most wumpa fruits. Around 16 characters were planned, and alongside staples like Crash and Tawna, there were brand-new creations like a hamster and a squid.

It's unclear what happened to Wumpa League, but apparently, a number of key players left the project. Remember, Activision took Toys for Bob and put the team on support for Call of Duty: Warzone. Still, Robertson says he's seen enough to be sure the Crash multiplayer is Wumpa League back from the dead - it remains to be seen if it'll keep the title.

When Will We See The Crash Bandicoot Multiplayer?

Let's be honest, Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard likely wasn't swayed by Crash. Even though we might have a lot of nostalgic love for him, he's a small fish in a very big pond that's largely dominated by Call of Duty. Responding to Robertson's tweet, Jez Corden corroborated the news and said there are 10 playable characters currently in the build - hooray for Dingodile. 

Unfortunately, there's no news on when the game could be announced. Microsoft recently rattled Sony fans when it seemingly poked fun at the fact it now owns Crash. It's been two years since we last saw the gaming icon, and while our hopes of Crash 5 have been placed on hold, we doubt Activision is letting him just sit there. Even if a multiplayer isn't quite a full-blown sequel, at least it's something.
