If you aren't excited for Cyberpunk 2077, then seriously, where have you been for the past eight years? It's been a labour of love for both CD Projekt Red and gaming fans since the much-hyped sci-fi shooter was first announced back in 2012. We're just days away from the game's long-awaited release, but for those expecting to be given everything at once, you might have sit on your hands for a little longer.

The main pull of Cyberpunk 2077 is the ambitious single-player campaign that tasks players with suiting up as a customisable mercenary called V. As you turn V into your very own designer action hero, you'll explore the sprawling Night City and its six distinct districts. If that wasn't enough, we're promised there's an equally expansive multiplayer coming further down the line - emphasis on the "later" part of that sentence. Now, we know why the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer is taking so long to craft.

Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer: what is it?

Although there's plenty of mystery surrounding the game's multiplayer, developers are keen to roll out the welcome wagon early. Even if those at the top aren't ready to reveal how it will work, CD Projekt Joint CEO Adam Kicinski reiterated how big the project will be - calling it a "standalone product". Discussing the fact that we keep calling it a multiplayer mode in a recent investor call (via Seeking Alpha), Kicinski said, "So, first, we don't call it modes. It's a separate dedicated production, a big production. We think about it as a standalone product".

He continued, "Obviously, it’s not entirely standalone as it comes from the universe of Cyberpunk and is very much related to the concept of single player Cyberpunk we – I came up with. But from our perspective, it’s — is another independent production and independent team of people works on it".

When it comes to multiplayer, there's a completely different team working on it. This shouldn't come as any major surprise when looking at how the likes of Rockstar's Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online work. CD Projekt Red would also be wise to watch how both of these work. Elsewhere, Call of Duty: Warzone has churned out an evolving story with different seasons. It will be interesting to see if the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer adopts the same way of working.

Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer: When's it coming out?

Unfortunately, that's all we know about multiplayer for now. Kicinski said now wasn't the time to go into further detail because he wants to "avoid any fast in our gaming community". CD Projekt Red previously teased there will be more news in Q1 2021, meaning early next year could be one to watch. There are those who are worried there won't be enough content to keep players invested until multiplayer comes out, however, others claim you'll be ploughing hundreds of hours into the main story.

By the sounds of it, Kicinski and co. will hype multiplayer once the main game has finally hit consoles and PC, however, let's remember there are swirling rumours that multiplayer might not arrive until 2022. CD Projekt Publishing Head Michal Nowakowski solemnly warned, “2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer”.

Let's also remember there's a whole host of DLCs coming our way, with CD Projekt Red saying it will have "no fewer" than what The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hadWith multiplayer AND a slew of DLC content, fear not, Cyberpunk 2077 has plenty to keep you occupied for the foreseeable future.
