Cyberpunk 2077 Has Been Pulled From The PlayStation Store
PlayStation owners are saying night-night to Night City (for now) as Sony has spectacularly pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store. While it feels like we've been waiting longer for CD Projekt Red's futuristic shooter than Rockstar Games has been delaying the announcement of GTA 6, Cyberpunk 2077 is still billed as one of this year's biggest games. The problem is, it sounds like developers should've let the console versions marinate for a bit longer.
Delays were order of the day when it came to Cyberpunk 2077 as CD Projekt Red pushed the game from its original April 16 release to September 17, then November 19, and (finally) December 10. Although the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic was to blame for a lot of the problems, devs admitted it was the console versions still holding up the queue as the flashy PC port looked like it was ready to go.
We know a next-gen version is coming for PS5 and Xbox Series in 2021, but for the time being, current-gen consoles look like they might as well have been hacked by one of the game's many techy terrorists.
Why was Cyberpunk 2077 pulled from the PS Store?
Posting on the official PlayStation site, the company explained how it “strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction”, meaning Cyberpunk 2077 isn't quite cutting the mustard in its current form. Sony continued to explain it "will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store". As the final nail in the coffin, the game will be axed from the PS Store "until further notice".
For a storefront as big as PlayStation to pull a AAA title like Cyberpunk 2077 is almost unheard of and comes at the end of an abysmal week for CD Projekt Red where the developer had started issuing its own refunds. Aside from complaints about graphics not reaching the standards we've been promised over the years (see below), glitches galore have been plaguing the title.
Although an unlimited money glitch is a handy one to have around, there have been problems with everything from cars to penises clipping through the air. Added to this, there's a worrying dildo density (as reported by Kotaku), which means devs have said they will patch some of them out.
Basically, if it could've gone wrong, it's gone wrong. Sony was originally tricky to obtain a refund from when it came to your Cyberpunk 20777 gripes, so the latest development is a major U-turn. Those who want to apply for a refund through Sony are encouraged to do through the announcement post.
Cyberpunk 2077 being pulled from the PS Store: What's next?
It's not all doom and gloom though. CD Projekt Red has vowed to deliver a major patch before the end of the year that will hopefully alleviate some of the complaints. The problem is, there are so many to tackle, and with a list growing by the day, where would you even start? All in all, it doesn't bode well for the impending release on next-gen consoles. There are plenty of players who are holding off on buying Cyberpunk 2077 due to its lukewarm reception.
Despite gamers being offered a free upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S if they buy the current-gen version, it's not been enough to sway a large number of us parting with our cash. Worryingly, this has led to reports Cyberpunk 2077's botched release could cost CD Projekt founders up to $1 billion in losses. It also means the company has seen sales estimates tumble from 29.7M to 25.6M. Even though there's all this drama going on behind the scenes, there's no denying Cyberpunk 2077 is everywhere right now. Remembering that they say no publicity is bad publicity, we presume that's the mantra CD Projekt Red is gripping on to right now.
