The Need for Speed franchise is a long-standing one, racing through console generations and even inspiring a movie adaptation starring Aaron Paul. It’s been a constant presence in the racing game genre and has a historical success rate with fans of speed (as the title might suggest). Many fans have their own favourite, perhaps those they played when they were younger- but sadly, it looks like many favourites are being stripped from digital stores today.

In a post on Reddit, the community manager of the series shared the news that some of the popular Need for Speed titles will be retired today. Max_Joker has said in the needforspeed subreddit; ‘Decisions to retire games are never made easy, but we are now shifting fears to focus on the future of Need for Speed. The development teams and operational staff have put a lot of timer and passion into the development, creation, release and upkeep of the game over the years, and we love to see you play.’

The games leaving online stores are Need for Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Undercover, Need for Speed Shift, Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed and Need for Speed The Run. These titles will also have their in-game stores closed too, so no more DLC or extra items will be purchasable for them.

It’s sad to see the games go, but often in game development, it’s a necessity to keep up the focus on upcoming titles. Still, with Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered, there’s hope for even more remasters for the series. Undercover Remastered? Shift Remastered? Only time will tell.
