GTA 6 Won't Release Before The End Of 2022
The question on everyone's lips is when will the next Grand Theft Auto game be released? It's been eight years since GTA V raced into our lives and earned itself the legacy of being the most profitable entertainment product of all time, however, there's still no sign of the mythical GTA 6.
Despite the fact Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive haven't even announced GTA 6 yet, we're inundated with supposed "leaks" and rumours. Sadly, an official update from the top confirms we won't be returning to San Andreas before the end of 2022.
Why won't GTA 6 be out before the end of 2022?
Take-Two Interactive is one of the biggest publishers around - owning the keys to everything from Borderlands to BioShock and GTA. Remembering that we're currently in the fiscal 2022 year, Take-Two reported some impressive results for the first quarter (via Business Wire). Hidden among a slew of announcements, there's the snippet that GTA 6 definitely won't release before the end of 2022.
There are four games still to come before the end of the financial year, with WWE 2K22, NBA 2K22, the Borderlands spinoff that is Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and a mysterious fourth game. Although Take-Two highlighted "a total of 19 core releases" that are currently in the works, there was no update on GTA 6.
Instead of the next chapter of GTA, Take-Two President Karl Slatoff hyped Tina Tina's and added, "In addition, later this month, 2K will unveil details of another exciting new franchise planned for launch during this fiscal year".
What's going on with GTA right now?
Although we're disappointed that it will be at least another year until we get to play GTA 6, there's good news for the franchise as a whole. Take-Two confirmed that GTA V has now sold over 150 million copies and has been the best-selling game of the decade in the United States.
Sales have been bolstered by the ongoing success of GTA Online - which recently added a Mario Kart-inspired update. Since May 2021, five million copies of GTA V have been sold across all platforms. The continued popularity of GTA V and Online might be a reason Rockstar is taking it easy with announcing GTA 6.
Later this year, at least we can sit down to the GTA V Expanded & Enhanced version on November 11. Although it's up for debate, some think the fact Rockstar has promised more than just a graphical update means we could get our first proper tease of GTA 6. There was at least some form of update, with Take-Two confirming it's over to Rockstar to (eventually) announce GTA 6.
