Marvel's Midnight Suns Gameplay Trailer Has Us Worried
Firaxis Games is assembling the Avengers for Marvel's Midnight Suns, as the spandex-clad superheroes are coming together to fight a new foe. While Firaxis is best-known for the XCOM series, the first look at Midnight Suns shows it'll be anything but a comic book spin-off. But is that a good thing?
While rumours of a new Marvel game were typically ruined ahead of time, the latest reveal wasn't for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, more DLCs for Marvel's Avengers, or a long-awaited X-Men game - come on, we need another X-Men Legends.
Marvel's Midnight Suns and its all-star roster of heroes and antiheroes like Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and Captain Marvel has the potential to be great, however, players are less than impressed with the latest reveal.
Why do players already hate Marvel's Midnight Suns?
We weren't really sure what Marvel's Midnight Suns was at first, however, the first reveal at Gamescom had us suitably pumped. Unfortunately, some of this hasn't transferred into gameplay, Namely, critics are calling out the title as a card game. Card games are definitely a niche, and while there are plenty of fans, the idea of merging this with Marvel has proved to be a divisive decision.
At the time of writing, Marvel's Midnight Suns has 7.8k likes on YouTube and 1.2k dislikes. Even though that's a positive majority, the comments are particularly scathing. One disgruntled player wrote, "WTH!! It looks like a 2015 mobile game, BUT it's not! HAHA I'm really surprised! So much animation done 'in this quality' just for a turn-based card RPG game. Congratulations and good luck!"
Another added, "Would've loved to try this out but with card mechanics and the looks of a mobile game, I'm not so sure anymore. Maybe a demo can change my mind", while a third concluded, "Not impressed by the initial card game gameplay aspects shown here, looking like a c tier mobile game atm. Definitely need to see a deep dive into the game systems and combat for this one."
When is Marvel's Midnight Suns coming out?
Despite its naysayers, Marvel's Midnight Suns promises to adapt the out-there comic arc of the 90s. Firaxis aims to deliver a "deeply customisable tactical battle system that rewards clever thinking with superhero flair". Turn-based battling and a Fire-Emblem style could be a winner, but for the time being, the developer has some convincing to do.
Whether you want to play or not, Marvel's Midnight Suns is heading toward its March 2022 release. The YouTube comments said that the dark themes of the game would've been better suited for a Halloween release, but most agree there's no point rushing just to hit an earlier release.
Even though Marvel's Midnight Suns will launch with 12 playable characters, there are already suggestions the team will continue to expand. Some have potentially spotted a nod to Scarlet Witch in the trailer, so as long as the game gets a warm reception at the start, it could be sticking around for a while. Hopefully, we won't have a Marvel's Avengers-style launch of troubles and lacklustre reviews. Either way, Marvel's Midnight Suns isn't holding its "cards" close to its chest any longer.
