It may not be of any surprise to you - unless you’ve been living under a rock - but Squid Game became an overnight sensation in the most literal way. Now surpassing numbers for the likes of Tiger King and The Witcher, the limited series’ popularity has been unexpected, but entirely deserved.

Squid Game has taken over the world in a matter of mere weeks, with familiar battle royale elements mixing with its arcing narrative of financial detriment helping it to resonate across the globe. And apparently, it looks like Squid Game won’t start and end with a Netflix series.

A Squid Game Video Game Could Be Coming

No, not Fall Guys. A Squid Game spin-off game could be on the way very soon from an unnamed studio. It makes sense to gamify the massive title (just like Netflix has done with a selection of Stranger Things games and a Dead By Daylight crossover), and according to popular leaker Tom Henderson, it could be on the way.

"Apparently a ‘SQUID GAME’ type of game is in development already", he says. "I’m not sure of the developer just yet though. The future of BR is coming."

It would be interesting to see where this goes, and if it actually comes to light - but there’s one trouble that the game might run into as it tries to tackle the market.

Squid Game’s Video Game Has Already Been Done

The trouble is that Squid Game’s structure would usually adapt to video games nicely - so well, in fact, that it’s already been done. Many have been quick to note that the series is basically just a Fall Guys series, and they’re not far off - the game show style and silly obstacles have already been tackled by the video game industry, albeit with less personal stakes.

Plus, if the game intended to innovate on the ideas of the series, they run into another problem - that’s just a battle royale game. We have a lot of those already, and a Squid Game spin-off is likely to enter a market that’s already so inundated with choice that it won’t stand a chance once the novelty of its iconography wears off.

A new studio is more than welcome to tackle a series like Squid Game, and the show is so good we’d actively encourage it. Well, if it weren’t for the many games that look so similar. Still, we’re intrigued to see what this game looks like, even if it might struggle to stay afloat in a sea of preexisting battle royale titles.
