With a swish of a sword and a click of a button, Sony just gave us a major reason to sign up for PlayStation Now. While the Sony subscription model can be a sometimes confusing affair, the differences between PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now are about to become more apparent thanks to Final Fantasy

Sitting between Mario Kart's 158.14 million and Minecraft's 200 million, Final Fantasy's 159 million copies sold across 15 main entries has made it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time.

No. 16 was announced last September for PlayStation 5, and while it's set to be another blockbuster, you might want to brush up on the history of the franchise.

Which Final Fantasy games are coming to PS Now?

In case you didn't know, PlayStation Now is a cloud gaming service that lets you play some of your favourite titles without having to clog up your console's memory, or pay those sometimes extortionate prices to buy them. Even though some opt for the PlayStation Plus model that's similar to Xbox Gold, others prefer Now as the Netflix of Sony.

An official PlayStation Blog has confirmed five classic Final Fantasy games are coming to PlayStation Now. There's an impressive roadmap that kicks off next week when Final Fantasy VII (the OG, not remake) hits the ground running. From then on out, Sony will be delivering a beloved entry every month until January 4, 2022.

On the roster of FF faves, go back to the PS One with VII, follow it with VIII remastered on October 5, IX on November 2, X/X-2 HD Remaster on December 7, and round things off with XII The Zodiac Age on January 4. All in all, your $9.99/£8.99 a month is looking pretty great right now.

Why is it important that Final Fantasy is on PS Now?

The Final Fantasy legacy stretches all the way back to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and over the years, the games have been ported to everything and anything. Only recently, Square Enix has been tinkering away on the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series to update the old Final Fantasy 1-6 titles.

So many Final Fantasy games coming to PlayStation Now is pretty big news. So far, only one game has ever made the cut, with Final Fantasy 15 being pulled from the service in February after only just arriving last summer. The reason so many classic FF games are coming in such quick succession will undoubtedly have something to do with Final Fantasy XVI's PlayStation exclusivity.

Considering Final Fantasy is held as one of the most influential RPG franchises of all time, adding them to PlayStation Now is a great place for you to start if you don't necessarily know whether Square Enix's goliath is for you. If nothing else, PS Now subscribers might as well sink a few hours into FF VII on September 7 to see if it's for them. Happy hunting.
