For many, Apex Legends cross-play is an absolute blessing. The opportunity to play with friends in your favourite game despite their console has heavily dampened the fury of the console wars, and has opened up gaming to consider that maybe, video games are meant to be shared, and your hardware shouldn’t get in the way of having fun.

It’s an advent that has changed the landscape of gaming for the better, but when it comes to competitive play, it’s had some trouble with balancing, with many feeling that PC has the upper hand when it comes to crossplay lobbies. One of the sceptics of crossplay is Shroud, who isn’t entirely sure that Apex Legends will ever get it right.

Shroud Says Apex Crossplay Will Never Be Balanced

Michael "Shroud" Grzesiek is one of many who don’t have much faith in Apex Legends’ crossplay capabilities, especially in competitive games. “It’ll never be balanced, that’s what sucks”, he says in a recent YouTube video.

“Like, you get rid of aim assist, then controller sucks. Like, there’s no perfect balance there, and it sucks because crossplay really is the future of gaming for sure. I wanna be able to play with anyone I can. It’s just a tricky thing that’ll never get fixed, because there’s no fix, really.”

He’s got a point - aim assist is a struggle that keeps crossplay from being fair, but it seriously restricts console players. The balance there might be difficult to strike, or as Shroud says, may be even impossible.

Shroud Thinks Crossplay Should Stick To Casual Play

Shroud then goes on to explain his feelings more in a Twitch stream, where he addresses his concerns for aim assist. “Let us exist in casual play all day”, he says. “Just don’t mix it into a professional environment. The fact that Apex professional teams have to have at least one minimum controller player does not sit right with me.”

It’s a shame that crossplay, something that was designed to bring gamers together, has instead stoked a lot of division. Maybe Shroud is right, and the professional scene needs a fix for crossplay’s struggles - but who knows what shape that will take.
