Spider-Man 2 Dev Claps Back At Trailer Criticism
It's a "marvelous" time to be alive if you're a comic book fan. As well as the ongoing success of superhero movies from DC and Marvel, the video game world has also faced a resurgence thanks to the likes of Rocksteady's Arkham games, Insomniac's Spider-Man, and the hopeful release of its sequel, WB Montreal's Gotham Knights, and Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Among all of the above, it's Spider-Man 2 that's earning most of the hype right now. As well as 2018's original neatly setting up a sequel, the PS5-exclusive Miles Morales expansion queued Nadji Jeter's junior hero up as a much-needed companion for Peter Parker. The trailer aired as part of this year's PS5 showcase, and while most were blown away, others called it out as a fake.
What has Insomniac said about the Spider-Man 2 trailer?
The problem actually comes from Spider-Man 2 looking too good. When the trailer aired as part of the Sony showcase, sceptics were quick to call out the impressive graphics and claim they were shown an overhyped CGI rendering. Keen to put the rumours to bed, Insomniac Lead VFX Artist Bryanna Lindsey confirmed it was filmed in-game.
Posting on Twitter, Lindsey clapped back at naysayers that think they were shown a glossy tease that won't represent the finished product. Lindsey shared a clip of the Spider-Man 2 trailer alongside some CGI from Miles Morales. We always knew the PS5 would be able to pack a punch in terms of graphical capabilities, but by the looks of it, Spider-Man 2 will really push those boundaries.
What's next for Spider-Man 2?
The post-credits of Spider-Man teased that the absent Harry Osborn would put a twist on the comic book source material and step into the symbiote of Venom. If this is the case, it would suggest Harry's Venom and Norman Osborn's Green Goblin would be the big bads of the sequel.
Interestingly, the Spider-Man 2 trailer featured a voice that many think belongs to Kraven the Hunter, meaning he could step out of the shadows for a much darker sequel with Venom in tow. Elsewhere, horror legend and Candyman veteran Tony Todd will be voicing Venom, who has already praised the "massive" size of Spider-Man 2. Remembering how big Spider-Man and Miles Morales were, this open-world just got a little bigger.
We know Spider-Man 2 is destined for release in 2023, which might explain why it's going the whole hog on graphics. Given its proposed release window, Spider-Man 2 probably won't release on the PS4 and won't have to worry about the limitations of current-gen hardware. If that wasn't enough, there's also Insomniac's Wolverine game to get you pumped. Suddenly, Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers looks like Cyberpunk 2077 compared to what Insomniac has on offer.
