It's a case of "go web, go", as Insomniac games suits up in spandex for another Spider-Man game. The 2021 PS5 Showcase finally unveiled Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to the world, with an all-star team of Peter Parker and Miles Morales taking on Venom.

Ahead of the game's 2023 release, players are already asking for a Venom spin-off. Remembering we had Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales to fill in the gaps, Insomniac delivered something that was much more than a DLC - giving us a chance to get to grips with a very different wall-crawling hero before he steps up to the plate in Spider-Man 2

What have fans said about a Venom spin-off?

Posting on Reddit, u/Additional_Safety_15 shared their idea for a Venom spin-off that would follow in the footsteps of Miles Morales. The post soon took off, with others throwing their money at the screen and hoping Insomniac is listening.

One gamer wrote, "Would be a great way to introduce Carnage and be rated M", while another added, "Maybe Wolverine will be a test for darker themes they want to go into". Not everyone was convinced though, as a third said, "I feel like I’m the only one that genuinely just wants venom to JUST be a villain. Everyone is talking about possible redemption arcs and spin-off games. Just make him a compelling villain we gotta beat."

Someone else concluded, "A few years ago I’d say that’d either be impossible or at the very least it would end up being a sh*tty cash grab. Now, there’s legitimate potential for a quality spin-off. I’d just hope that if they do make one, they’d have the balls to let him be a villain still. Assuming he hasn’t had an entire redemption arc by the end of SM2."

The fact that Candyman legend Tony Todd is signed on to play the slippery symbiote means we hope this isn't just a one and done game. Insomniac has only just confirmed the existence of Spider-Man 2, meaning any plans for a potential sequel are presumably a while off. Still, there's plenty of Venom story to be told.

Could Venom get his own spin-off?

It's unclear what route Insomniac is taking with Venom. One popular theory is that the developer will put its own spin on the source material and have Harry Osborn as the game's Venom. With Harry mysterious MIA status in 2018's original, the ending showed him hooked up to a tank of goop, with something that looked a lot like the symbiote attached to him.

If Spider-Man 2 goes down this route, it could also see Norman Osborn step out of the shadows as the Green Goblin - in an effort to save his son. Then again, the first trailer also teased Kraven the Hunter, and remembering how Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 fudged the landing, we're in danger of villain overkill.

We're not saying that Insomniac's first game wasn't amazing, but unfortunately, some members of the Sinister Six got the short straw and were little more than side characters. Who really remembers Scorpion? Then again, Venom and Green Goblin in one game would be a nice nod to Raimi's panned threequel.

It would be a shame to waste a character with as much as potential, so it's easy to imagine a Miles Morales-esque Venom spin-off that either serves as a prequel or sequel. If Eddie Brock is the unlucky host this time around, Sony's Venom movies have already proved there's plenty of love for the investigative journalist. Sorry, Topher Grace.

Whether it's Harry, Eddie, Flash Thompson, or someone completely new, rest assured that everything should become clearer when Marvel's Spider-Man 2 swings into action in 2023.
