R2-D2 has a holographic message for us all, but it might not be the one you're hoping for. We finally know Respawn Entertainment is working on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2, which will once again put a lightsaber in Cal Kestis' hand. Even though knowledge that a sequel to the 2019 Souls-like is on the way is reassuring, we'd quite like a release date.

Before Fallen Order, Star Wars games were usually reduced to LEGO spin-offs or Battlefront titles. We had a few diamonds in the rough with original IPs like The Force Unleashed and Knights of the Old Republic, but more often than not, things from the galaxy far, far away, weren't that good.

When Will Fallen Order 2 Release?

In Electronic Arts' latest financial presentation, there's no specific mention of Fallen Order 2's release. Before you start howling like a Tusken Raider, note that there's a mention of a "Partner Title" launching in Q4. Looking at what we know EA is working on, it doesn't take the smarts of Yoda to figure out this is probably Fallen Order 2.

If this placeholder release date is for Respawn's sequel, we can logically expect a Fallen Order 2 release date some point between January and March next year. That gives Respawn plenty of time to tinker away behind the scenes, but sadly means we won't be getting the game for nearly a year. Then again, that might mean the upcoming Star Wars Celebration could finally give us a glimpse at Cal's next adventure.

More than just some sketchy leak, this is based on actual EA reports. It's much of what we heard recently, when VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb claimed Fallen Order 2 will launch next year. Added to this, he seems sure it will drop the Fallen Order part of its name, so who knows what it will actually be called?

Will Fallen Order 2 Be A New-Gen Exclusive?

If Fallen Order 2 twirls into action next year, it puts us in that strange limbo between generations. Although the likes of Spider-Man: Miles MoralesDeathloop, and Ghostwire Tokyo launched as new-gen exclusives, it's still the norm to bridge the gap. We've already been warned that this year's God of War Ragnarok might be the last PS4 exclusive, so it's clear the times are changing. Grubb also said Fallen Order 2 will new-gen only

Even though it's possible Fallen Order 2 could make the leap into the void of new-gen only, we don't see it happening. It's no secret that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles are still like gold dust, and to lock out such a ravenous base of wannabe Jedis seems like a mistake on a par with trusting Anakin to babysit your Younglings. Then again, we just saw Gotham Knights go full new-gen, so we'll look out for rumblings in the Force on this one.
