The Witcher Fans Demand Mads Mikkelsen Replace Henry Cavill
The sordid saga of Netflix's The Witcher continues, and while we need to accept that Henry Cavill is laying down his sword, some of us still can't believe the OG Geralt of Rivia is bowing out.
While it's great news that we're edging closer to The Witcher season 3, it's a bittersweet pill because we know it will be Cavill's last. The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth is next to take the mantle, and obviously, there have been some complaints.
With Cavill embodying everything you need to play Geralt, fans are disappointed that he's exiting now. However, they think they've got an answer for who should replace him.
Fans Want Mads Mikkelsen To Play Geralt Of Rivia
Considering Cavill's love of the source material, it's an especially sad state of affairs. Reports claim he tried to leave after season 2, but whatever behind-the-scenes drama has been going on, it's time to realise he isn't coming back.
Fan art from 3D artist Wonki Cho has shown off Mads Mikkelsen as Geralt. We've got to admit, he embodies the brooding presence of the White Wolf in all his gruff glory.
The artwork actually comes from 2020, but now that fandom has turned against the "new" Geralt, it could be time to revisit the idea. Over on ArtStation, you can see Cho's work, which imagines Mikkelsen in a variety of scenarios.
A search of "Mikkelsen" and "Geralt" on Twitter turns up a tonne of requests. "If I had to pick someone else it would be mads mikkelsen, purely due to his resemblance of Geralt in the games," said one supporter.
Another added, "Netflix should have chosen Mads Mikkelsen as the matured Geralt for Season 4," while a third simply said, "Mads Mikkelsen for Geralt. And change showrunner."
Could Mads Mikkelsen Play Geralt Of Rivia?
Of course, looking great as Geralt is a far cry from actually playing him in The Witcher. For those sceptics, Hemsworth was reportedly in the running back before Geralt was even cast. That hasn't stopped 242k people signing a petition to bring back Cavill.
You might know Mikkelsen for his intense portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in NBC's Hannibal series. For years, people lobbied for the dashing Dane to play Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, but instead, that part went to Pilou Asbæk.
More recently, Mikkelsen took over from Johnny Depp to play Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. So, it's not like he isn't used to taking over legacy characters.
We're sure Mikkelsen is flattered by all these fan castings, but no matter what you think, Hemsworth looks locked in for now. In the inevitable reboot of The Witcher in many years' time, we could always cast Mikkelsen as an Old Man Geralt.
