There are some dark rumblings in the Force and we can hear Emperor Palpatine's evil cackle from here. Although Ubisoft is working on an open-world Star Wars game to add to the galaxy of titles we've already got, the publisher might have bad news for fans of the Falcon.

While Star Wars games were once remembered for disappointing entries like Yoda Stories and Jedi Arena, we're in something of a renaissance thanks to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and hopes for a Mandalorian/Boba Fett game. Among the droid scrap metal, we've also got Massive Entertainment's mysterious open-world Star Wars game... or do we?

What's Going On With Ubisoft's Star Wars Game?

Lucasfilm Games has partnered with Ubisoft for Project Star Wars. Given that the team is currently working on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we'd guessed there would be a bit of a wait. Now, we've heard exactly how long that could be. The game was announced early last year, but since then, there's been little in terms of updates.

Industry insider Tom Henderson claims Project Star Wars won't be landing until at least 2025. That's an achingly long wait for a game that has so much potential, but then again, it's best not to rush - as Cyberpunk 2077 will tell you. Writing on Xfire, Henderson explained that a recent Ubisoft report doesn't even mention Star Wars because it's simply so far, far away.

Last year, Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, warned it was early days when he said: "The vast Star Wars lore is an incredible source of inspiration for our teams. This is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love."

Are There More Star Wars Games On The Way?

We also need to bear in mind that as well as Frontiers of Pandora, Massive Entertainment is still working on The Division 2, meaning Star Wars is right down the list. As Massive continues its recruitment drive for the galaxy far, far away, expect to hear more soon. In some wild fantasy, could we see the resurrection of the forgotten Star Wars: 1313

Notably, Ubisoft's progress (or lack of) mirrors what Quantic Dream has said about Star Wars Eclipse. Recently, a spokesperson clapped back at reports of a delay and sarcastically reminded us it didn't have a concrete release day. However, as each of these games chugs along at a snail's pace, remember that they're likely going to be competing in an ever-decreasing space. With lightsabers drawn, it will be interesting to see which Star Wars game comes out on top.
