FIFA 23 Crossplay: Cross Progression, Cross-Market, And More

FIFA 23 crossplay is finally here, but it comes in a couple of different forms across various modes that can make it quite confusing overall. You'll finally be able to battle against your friends on different platforms in FIFA, and it even extends to some parts of the Ultimate Team game mode too. Although this is not technically the first time crossplay has appeared in FIFA, as FIFA 22 featured it in the Online Friendlies and Online Seasons game modes, it is the first proper expansion of the feature to the most populated modes.

FIFA 23 crossplay will be available within the following game modes:

• Online Friendlies
• FUT Play a Friend
• FUT Online Friendlies
• Online Seasons
• FUT Rivals
• FUT Champions
• FUT Online Draft

The one key feature that is missing from this list is the Pro Clubs game mode, you can find out the status on Pro Clubs crossplay in FIFA 23 here.

However, it is unfortunately not quite as simple as that makes it seem. While the notion that FIFA 23 has crossplay is correct, it is unfortunately split into two distinct platform groups that do somewhat restrict who you can play with. These groups are defined by the platform generation you play on, so Xbox One and PS4 players are sadly isolated from the current set of consoles and PC. You will still be able to play with people across your console generation, but you cannot breach these boundaries, presumably due to the advanced features like Hypermotion2 that will not make it to the previous-gen editions of the game.

The two FIFA 23 crossplay groups are as follows:

• PlayStation 4, Xbox One
• PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X│S, Stadia, PC (via Steam/Origin)

This does of course mean that the current-gen version of the game is finally being implemented onto the PC platform, which will certainly please the countless players who have previously been frustratingly left behind. 

Furthermore, the crossplay feature will be automatically enabled when you launch FIFA 23 for the first time, and it is your choice to opt out, meaning that we should hopefully have the largest player pool available to play with.

Another huge feature that is coming in tandem with crossplay to the game is a never seen before FIFA 23 cross-market system. Previously, each platform would possess its own transfer market, where you could only buy and sell cards put up by players from your current platform. 

In FIFA 23 however, this is completely opening up, creating a (nearly) all-encompassing transfer market where you can trade with almost anyone, regardless of platform. The one key caveat is that PC and the Nintendo Switch will have their own individual markets, separate from the rest, which is unfortunately a real shame.

The three FIFA 23 cross-market transfer market platform pools are:

• PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X│S, Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
• PC
• Switch

This could, however, have rather severe ramifications for the transfer market and player prices. Due to the severe increase of potential cards to be listed on the transfer market, we could potentially see prices drop faster than they ever have before due to sheer supply, amplified by the large chunk of people receiving the 4600 free FIFA Points from the FIFA 23 preorder bonus. This could also have a knock-on effect on the prices of the top-tier players, sending them even higher as the demand outweighs the supply. 

We could also see EA implement different SBC requirements for PC compared to the platforms in the primary transfer market pool, as the prices will likely be significantly higher for players on Steam and Origin. This might not be implemented, but it would be a welcome change to prevent the relative overpricing of across-the-board content. 

Finally, these transfer market pools for the FIFA 23 cross-market system will be enabled regardless of whether you opt out of crossplay or not, meaning that there is no way to turn it off if for whatever reason you didn't want it.

Will FIFA 23 Have Cross Progression?

There is currently no mention of a FIFA 23 cross progression system among EA's crossplay details, implying that it is something that they are likely not going to implement in this title at least. 

Therefore, if you were wanting to transfer to a different platform, whether temporarily or permanently, you would have to start a completely new club from the beginning again. It would have been a great feature to include for players with a Steam Deck, for example, allowing them to continue their PS5 grind on the go, but this will not be the case.
