Street Fighter 6: Release Date, Trailers, Fighters, And More

Street Fighter is one of the most iconic franchises in video game history, with its second game setting the blueprint for how fighting games should work, and subsequent titles becoming mainstays in competitive esports. With the recent reveal of Street Fighter 6, the king of the genre is set to return, and we finally have a tonne of info on how the next entry will evolve the series and retain the spirit of its predecessors. So read on for a breakdown of everything we know about Street Fighter 6, including the release date, trailers, gameplay, and more. 

Street Fighter 6 Release Date

A trailer released during The Game Awards 2022 revealed that Street Fighter 6 is set to launch on June 2, 2023. Just ahead of the Game Awards, the release date for Street Fighter 6 was also revealed by accident.

The game was listed early on the PS4 store, showing three editions of the game that will be available for purchase. The Standard edition includes the base game, the Deluxe edition includes the year one character pass, and the Ultimate edition includes a year one ultimate pass, which we assume includes the characters and some extra goodies.

Street Fighter 6 Trailers

There have been two trailers for Street Fighter 6 so far, with the first debuting in February to reveal the game and tease it. It’s fairly short, coming in at 39 seconds overall, and shows off some CGI footage of Ryu and a new character, who was revealed to be called Luke in the trailer that released in June. This trailer also gave us a look at the new logo, which was quickly panned by everyone online, causing them to change it up. 

Our second look at the game was a lot more comprehensive and came during the PlayStation State of Play for June. Not only does is give us a look at gameplay, featuring Ryu, Chun-Li, and two newbies, Jamie and Luke, but it revealed the new World Tour mode along with the open-world Metro City, which players can explore during a single-player campaign. While this a big departure from typical SF, there is still the typical fighting you would expect, which looks as impactful as ever. 

The last part of the trailer flashes some text for something called the Battle Hub, before showing the inside of a large glass building which looks like somewhere fighters can congregate.

While the trailers didn't give us a huge amount of info, the official Street Fighter website contains a myriad of details about the different gameplay modes, and some of the new features. 

Firstly, there is Fighting Ground, which is your traditional fighting arena for the legendary Street Fighter gameplay. There are few changes and evolutions on the formula though, such as the Battle System Design, which features simpler controls and the chance to time your attacks for flashier moves. The Drive Gauge is also a new implementation. It's available as soon as battle begins, allowing you to unleash powerful attacks, but draining it can leave you in a vulnerable burnout state. This tasks you with managing your metre, learning where to be conservative with your moves, and when to go all-out on your opponent. There are five moves that can be used from the Drive Gauge, which are the Drive Impact, Drive Parry, Overdrive, Drive Rush, and Drive Reversal. 

The game also offers two control types: modern and classic. This allows new players to jump right in and get familiar, while seasoned veterans can stick with their preferred method. One of the biggest new features for the Fighting Ground is the introduction of commentators. The actual esports casters for the Capcom Pro Tour will commentate on your battles in real time, hyping up each fight and making it feel like a big event.

Perhaps the biggest change to Street Fighter 6 is the introduction of a single-player campaign, called World Tour. There isn't a lot of information about how this will work yet, but it seems that you will play an up-and-coming fighter who is looking to carve out their legend and make their name as a Street Fighter. Lastly, there is the Battle Hub. This is another mode we don't know a lot about yet, but it seems to be the game's multiplayer mode.

The most important part of any fighter game is its roster, and the Street Fighter series has led to the creation of some of the most iconic characters in all of video games. So far, the only official confirmed characters are favourites Ryu and Chun-Li, along with two new fighters called Jamie and Luke. Street Fighter 6 Platforms

Street Fighter 6 is set to launch on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and select PC storefronts. There's no news on why the Xbox One won't be getting a version, but it could have something to do with a deal between Sony and Capcom.
